The Ligurian seafront town of Rapallo awoke to scenes of devastation on Tuesday, after a violent storm struck late on Monday night.

The storm was so powerful it caused the collapse of the harbour’s protective reinforced concrete breakwater, leaving the vessels in the bay defenceless. Motorboats, sailboats, and superyachts, including one reportedly belonging to the family of former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, broke their moorings and were left battered, beached and some even sunk by the storm.
