Method and Apparatus for Altering a Region in the Earth’s atmosphere, ionosphere, and / or magnetosphere Abstract A method and apparatus for altering the least a selected region, which is usually located on the surface of the earth. The region is excited by heating electron cyclotron resonance in order to increase the density of charged particles. In one embodiment, the circularly polarized electromagnetic radiation is transmitted upward in a direction substantially parallel and along a line of field extending through the plasma region to be altered. The radiation is transmitted to a resonance frequency which excites electron cyclotron to heat and accelerate the charged particles. This increased energy can cause ionization of neutral particles which are then absorbed as part of the region which increases the density of charged particles in the region.
